Chola Empire

The Chola Empire was a Tamil dynasty of southern India that, in its imperial or medieval phase, became one of the most powerful and enduring states in Indian history and a major maritime power of the Indian Ocean.

While the Chola lineage is far older, attested in the Sangam literature of the early centuries, the imperial dynasty was founded around 848 CE when Vijayalaya captured Thanjavur during a conflict between the Pallavas and Pandyas and made it his capital. His successors expanded steadily, building a sophisticated Hindu (Shaivite) state notable for its efficient administration, its tradition of local self-government through village assemblies, a powerful standing army, and an exceptional navy. The empire reached its zenith in the eleventh century. Rajaraja Chola I (985-1014) extended Chola power across the south, subdued the Pandyas and Cheras, conquered parts of Sri Lanka, and built the monumental Brihadeeswarar temple at Thanjavur, a masterpiece of Dravidian architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. His son Rajendra Chola I (1014-1044) carried Chola arms to the banks of the Ganges in the north and launched a remarkable overseas naval expedition against the Srivijaya empire of Sumatra and the Malay Peninsula around 1025, an unusual projection of Indian sea power that secured maritime trade routes to Southeast Asia and China. The Cholas presided over a golden age of Tamil culture, producing celebrated bronze sculpture, temple architecture, literature, and religious devotional traditions, and fostering extensive commercial and cultural links across the Indian Ocean. From the twelfth century the empire weakened under sustained pressure from the rising Hoysala and especially Pandya powers, along with internal strains. The dynasty was gradually eclipsed and finally extinguished around 1279, when the last Chola territory was absorbed by the resurgent Pandyas.
