The German Empire was the unified German nation-state proclaimed in 1871 under Prussian leadership, transforming a fragmented collection of German states into a single powerful empire at the heart of Europe.

Its creation was largely the work of the Prussian statesman Otto von Bismarck, who through a combination of diplomacy and three successful wars — against Denmark, Austria, and France — united the German states under the King of Prussia, Wilhelm I, who was proclaimed German Emperor in the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles in January 1871 following victory in the Franco-Prussian War. The new empire was a federal monarchy dominated by Prussia, with a powerful emperor and chancellor alongside an elected parliament, the Reichstag, whose powers were limited. Under Bismarck's leadership, Germany pursued a cautious foreign policy aimed at preserving stability through a web of alliances, while domestically it underwent extraordinarily rapid industrialisation, becoming one of the world's leading economies and a centre of science, engineering, and education. Bismarck also pioneered the modern welfare state, introducing pioneering social insurance programs. After Wilhelm II dismissed Bismarck in 1890, Germany adopted a more assertive and expansionist 'world policy,' building a large navy, acquiring colonies in Africa and the Pacific, and intensifying the great-power rivalries and arms races that destabilised Europe. These tensions culminated in the First World War, into which Germany entered in 1914 alongside Austria-Hungary. After four years of devastating industrial warfare and a tightening Allied blockade, military collapse and domestic upheaval in late 1918 brought the empire to an end: amid the German Revolution, Kaiser Wilhelm II abdicated and fled, the monarchy was abolished, and a republic was declared in November 1918. The empire's defeat and the punitive peace that followed shaped the turbulent course of twentieth-century German and European history.
