Moche Culture
The Moche, also called the Mochica, were a civilisation that flourished along the arid river valleys of the north coast of Peru from around 100 to 700 CE, centuries before the rise of the Inca.
The Moche were not a single unified empire but a culture shared among a series of polities along the coast, possibly organised as two or more regional confederations, that built a sophisticated society sustained by elaborate irrigation systems channelling water from the Andes to transform the desert into productive farmland. They are renowned above all for their extraordinary artistry. Moche ceramics are among the finest in the ancient Americas, including remarkably lifelike portrait vessels and stirrup-spout pots vividly depicting people, animals, deities, rituals, warfare, and daily life, providing an unusually detailed window into their world in the absence of a writing system. They were also masterful metalworkers in gold, silver, and copper, producing dazzling ceremonial objects and ornaments. The Moche built monumental adobe platform mounds known as huacas, the largest being the Huaca del Sol and Huaca de la Luna near modern Trujillo, which served as centres of political and religious power adorned with colourful murals. The 1987 discovery of the richly furnished royal tomb of the Lord of Sipán revealed the wealth and complexity of Moche elites and ritual life, which included human sacrifice depicted in their art. From around the sixth and seventh centuries the Moche entered a period of crisis and transformation, likely driven by severe climatic disruptions associated with El Niño events, prolonged droughts, and possibly social and political upheaval, which damaged their agricultural base. By approximately 700 CE the distinctive Moche culture had given way to successor societies such as the Lambayeque (Sicán) and later the Chimú on the same coast.
