On 1 October 1949, Mao Zedong proclaimed the founding of the People's Republic of China from the Tiananmen Gate in Beijing, with Zhou Enlai as premier.
The proclamation marked the Chinese Communist Party's victory over Chiang Kai-shek's Nationalists (Kuomintang) in a civil war that resumed after World War II; the defeated Nationalists retreated to Taiwan, where they maintained the Republic of China. The communist triumph brought roughly a quarter of humanity under a Marxist-Leninist government, decisively reshaping the global balance of the Cold War. It was followed by sweeping land reform, the nationalisation of industry, and close alignment with the Soviet Union, formalised in the 1950 Sino-Soviet Treaty. The new state's emergence alarmed the United States, contributed to the militarisation of the Cold War in Asia, and set the stage for Chinese intervention in the Korean War. The division between the PRC and the Taiwan-based ROC remains unresolved.
