Around the middle of the fourth millennium BCE the wheel-and-axle was harnessed for transport, producing the first wheeled vehicles. The earliest evidence appears nearly simultaneously across a broad zone of Europe and the Near East: pictographs of wagons on clay tablets from Uruk in Sumer (c.
3500–3350 BCE); the Bronocice pot from Funnelbeaker-culture Poland, incised with what is widely read as the oldest depiction of a four-wheeled wagon (radiocarbon-dated c. 3635–3370 BCE); and model wheels and cart finds scattered from the Caucasus to central Europe. The rotary principle itself was older — potter's wheels turned clay before carts carried loads — but mounting a wheel on a fixed axle to move heavy burdens transformed transport, trade, warfare and agriculture. Combined with ox-traction, the wheel allowed people to haul produce, timber, ore and manure across distances that human porters never could, reshaping economies and settlement.
