Significance

In 589 the armies of the Sui dynasty, founded by Emperor Wen (Yang Jian) in 581, conquered the southern Chen dynasty and reunified China for the first time since the fall of the Han in 220 CE, ending nearly four centuries of division known as the period of disunity.

Emperor Wen rebuilt a centralised bureaucratic state, restored a unified law code and the equal-field land system, standardised coinage and granaries, and revived a merit-based recruitment of officials that foreshadowed the imperial examination system. Though the Sui itself was short-lived, collapsing in 618 amid costly Korean campaigns and forced labour on great public works, its reunification created the political, administrative and territorial framework inherited by the long-lasting Tang dynasty. The Sui achievement is often compared to the earlier Qin unification: a brief but foundational regime whose institutions shaped a golden age that followed.
