- Significance
On 11 September 2001 the militant group al-Qaeda carried out coordinated suicide attacks against the United States, hijacking four passenger airliners.
Two were flown into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York, which collapsed; a third struck the Pentagon outside Washington, D.C.; and a fourth crashed in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania after passengers fought the hijackers. Nearly 3,000 people from over 90 countries were killed, the deadliest terrorist attack in history. The attacks, masterminded by Osama bin Laden, triggered the US-led 'War on Terror', the invasion of Afghanistan and later Iraq, and sweeping new security, intelligence and surveillance regimes worldwide. They reshaped global politics, air travel, civil-liberties debates and US foreign policy for decades, and stand as the defining geopolitical turning point of the early twenty-first century.
