Building on his 1769 separate-condenser patent, James Watt, in partnership with the Birmingham manufacturer Matthew Boulton, introduced in 1781 a steam engine capable of producing continuous rotary motion through his 'sun-and-planet' gearing.

Earlier Newcomen and Watt engines had supplied only the reciprocating up-and-down stroke useful for pumping water from mines. Rotary motion meant steam could now drive the shafts, belts and machinery of cotton mills, flour mills, breweries and ironworks, freeing manufacturers from dependence on water power and fixed riverside sites. Watt's engine consumed roughly three-quarters less fuel than a comparable Newcomen engine, making large-scale mechanised production economically viable. Boulton and Watt manufactured and sold close to 500 engines before their core patents lapsed in 1800. The rotative engine is widely regarded as a pivotal enabling technology of the Industrial Revolution, decoupling industrial output from the limits of muscle, wind and water and underpinning the rise of the steam-powered factory, the railway and, eventually, the steamship.
