By around the mid-first millennium BCE, ironworkers in South India and Sri Lanka developed wootz, the world's first true high-carbon crucible steel, with the technique well established by roughly 300 BCE.
Smiths sealed wrought iron together with carbon-rich plant matter such as bamboo and leaves inside clay crucibles and heated them in charcoal furnaces until the metal melted and absorbed carbon to a uniform content of about 1 to 1.6 percent. Slow cooling produced cakes of steel in which iron-carbide bands gave both exceptional hardness and toughness, along with the characteristic watered surface pattern. Sri Lanka's wider iron tradition included remarkable wind-driven furnaces sited on hillsides to harness monsoon winds for the draught, though the excavated examples at Samanalawewa date to the first millennium CE (roughly the 7th to 11th centuries) rather than to the earliest wootz period. Exported as ingots across the Arabian Sea and overland trade routes, wootz was prized throughout the Islamic world, where the twelfth-century geographer al-Idrisi called Indian 'Hinduwani' steel the best in the world, and it became the raw material from which Near Eastern smiths forged the legendary Damascus blades. Archaeological production sites at Kodumanal in Tamil Nadu (from about the 3rd century BCE) and the ironworking complex at Samanalawewa in Sri Lanka confirm the antiquity and sophistication of this metallurgical tradition.
