Shang Dynasty
The Shang Dynasty, also known as the Yin, is the earliest Chinese dynasty confirmed by both archaeological evidence and contemporary written records, ruling the North China Plain along the Yellow River from around 1600 to 1046 BCE.
Traditionally founded by King Tang after the overthrow of the semi-legendary Xia, the Shang presided over a sophisticated Bronze Age civilisation. Its rulers governed from a series of capitals, the best known being Yinxu near modern Anyang, where extensive excavations have revealed royal tombs, palace foundations, and workshops. The Shang are especially renowned for two achievements. The first is their mastery of bronze casting: using piece-mould techniques, Shang artisans produced ritual vessels of remarkable size, complexity, and decoration, used in ancestral ceremonies that were central to political and religious life. The second is the earliest known Chinese writing, the oracle bone script, inscribed on turtle shells and ox scapulae used in divination. These inscriptions, recording royal questions to ancestors and gods about war, harvests, weather, and ritual, are the direct ancestor of modern Chinese characters and provide invaluable evidence of Shang society, kingship, and religion. Shang society was hierarchical and militarised, with a king at its apex who served as both political ruler and chief intermediary with the ancestors and the supreme deity Di. The dynasty waged frequent warfare with neighbouring peoples, employing chariots, bronze weapons, and large levies. The last Shang king, traditionally depicted as the tyrant Di Xin (King Zhou), was overthrown around 1046 BCE by King Wu of the Zhou at the Battle of Muye, a transition later interpreted through the influential doctrine of the Mandate of Heaven. The Shang laid enduring foundations for Chinese statecraft, writing, and ritual culture.
