Xia Dynasty

The Xia Dynasty is traditionally regarded as the first dynasty in Chinese history, conventionally dated from around 2070 to 1600 BCE, though its existence remains a subject of scholarly debate.

According to later Chinese historical texts, most notably Sima Qian's Records of the Grand Historian written more than a millennium afterward, the Xia was founded by Yu the Great, a hero celebrated for taming the catastrophic floods of the Yellow River through years of dredging and channelling. Yu's reputed transfer of power to his own son rather than to a meritorious successor is presented in tradition as the origin of hereditary dynastic rule in China, replacing an earlier age of sage-kings chosen by virtue. The Xia is said to have ended when its last ruler, the tyrant Jie, was overthrown by Tang, founder of the Shang. The historicity of the Xia is contested because, unlike the Shang, no contemporary written records have been confirmed for it. Some archaeologists associate the dynasty with the Erlitou culture, a sophisticated Bronze Age society in the Yellow River basin whose palace foundations, bronze workshops, and urban planning date to roughly the period attributed to the Xia. However, because the Erlitou sites have produced no decisive inscriptions naming the dynasty, the identification remains tentative, and scholars continue to disagree about whether the Xia was a genuine historical state, a semi-legendary tradition, or a later projection. Regardless of its precise status, the Xia occupies a foundational place in Chinese historical and cultural memory as the legendary beginning of dynastic civilisation and the model of the rise and fall of dynasties under the Mandate of Heaven.
