Toltec State (Tula)

The Toltec state was a Mesoamerican polity centred on the city of Tula (Nahuatl: Tollan, 'place of reeds') on a ridge above the Tula River in present-day Hidalgo, Mexico, roughly 65 km northwest of modern Mexico City. Although settlement on the site began in the Epiclassic period (c.

700-750 CE) at the precinct now called Tula Chico, a major urban redevelopment around 900-950 CE shifted the civic-religious core to Tula Grande, marking the consolidation of the Toltec state, which reached its height between about 950 and 1150 CE. At its peak the city covered some 14-16 square kilometres and held a population estimated at 30,000 to 60,000, organised around monumental architecture including stepped pyramids, ball courts, colonnaded halls, and the famous basalt 'Atlantean' warrior columns atop the Pyramid of Quetzalcoatl. Toltec tradition, preserved chiefly in later Aztec sources such as the Anales de Cuauhtitlan, centres on the priest-king Ce Acatl Topiltzin Quetzalcoatl, whose exile after conflict with the cult of Tezcatlipoca became a foundational legend. Tula extended its commercial and political influence across central Mexico and traded over long distances, with notable parallels to Chichen Itza in Yucatan. The city suffered violent destruction in the mid-12th century, around 1150-1168 CE, amid Chichimec incursions, internal strife, and possible drought. The later Aztecs revered the Toltecs as the epitome of civilisation and claimed them as their cultural and dynastic predecessors, making 'Toltec' (Toltecatl) a byword for master craftsman and legitimate ruler.
