Significance

On 1 March 1896, near the town of Adwa in northern Ethiopia, an Ethiopian army under Emperor Menelik II decisively defeated an invading Italian colonial force led by General Oreste Baratieri.

The conflict arose from the disputed Treaty of Wuchale (1889), whose Amharic and Italian texts differed: the Italian version claimed a protectorate over Ethiopia, which Menelik rejected. Mobilising a large, well-armed force equipped with modern rifles imported from France and Russia, the Ethiopians routed the Italians within hours, inflicting heavy casualties. The defeat brought down the Italian government of Francesco Crispi and forced Italy, by the Treaty of Addis Ababa later in 1896, to abandon its protectorate claim and recognise Ethiopian sovereignty. Adwa was the most striking African victory over a European colonial power during the Scramble for Africa, securing Ethiopia's independence and making it a powerful symbol of resistance and a source of pride for anti-colonial and pan-African movements worldwide.
