Significance

On 1 March 1954 the United States detonated Castle Bravo, a lithium-deuteride-fuelled thermonuclear device, at Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands as the opening shot of Operation Castle.

With a yield of 15 megatons—roughly 2.5 times the predicted six megatons because of unforeseen reactions involving lithium-7—it was the most powerful nuclear device ever detonated by the United States, about a thousand times stronger than the Hiroshima bomb. Unexpected wind conditions carried heavy radioactive fallout, much of it pulverised coral, eastward onto the inhabited atolls of Rongelap and Utirik and onto the Japanese fishing vessel Daigo Fukuryu Maru (Lucky Dragon No. 5), whose radioman Aikichi Kuboyama later died, triggering an international crisis. The test was one of 67 American nuclear detonations conducted at Bikini and Enewetak between 1946 and 1958, a program that displaced Marshallese communities, left lands contaminated for generations, and caused lasting cancers and other illnesses. Castle Bravo galvanised the global anti-nuclear-testing movement, exposed the dangers of atmospheric thermonuclear weapons, and stands as the defining episode in the Cold War nuclearisation of Oceania.
