In 1543, as he lay dying, the Polish canon and astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus published De revolutionibus orbium coelestium (On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres) at Nuremberg.

Dedicated to Pope Paul III, the six-book treatise displaced the Earth from the centre of the cosmos and set the Sun near the centre, with Earth and the planets orbiting it. This directly challenged the Ptolemaic geocentric model that had dominated astronomy and Christian cosmology for some fourteen centuries. Copernicus had circulated an outline of his ideas decades earlier but delayed full publication, partly out of caution; his pupil Rheticus and the editor Andreas Osiander shepherded the book to press, Osiander adding an unsigned preface calling the system a mere calculating hypothesis. Though the model still relied on circular orbits and epicycles and won few immediate converts, it reframed the central question of astronomy and became the seed of the Scientific Revolution. Kepler, Galileo and Newton would build on the heliocentric premise, and the work's eventual placement on the Index of Forbidden Books (1616) marked the gathering conflict between the new astronomy and ecclesiastical authority.
