Significance

In 1543 the Flemish physician Andreas Vesalius, then only 28 and teaching at Padua, published De humani corporis fabrica libri septem (On the Fabric of the Human Body in Seven Books).

Based on his own meticulous dissections of human cadavers rather than on animal anatomy or ancient authority, the work corrected hundreds of errors in the long-revered texts of Galen, whose anatomical descriptions had gone largely unquestioned for some 1,300 years. The Fabrica integrated more than 200 detailed woodcut illustrations, executed by artists trained in the circle of Titian, that combined scientific accuracy with striking visual power, setting a new standard for medical illustration. By insisting that knowledge of the body must come from direct observation and hands-on dissection, Vesalius helped shift medicine toward empirical investigation. Published in the same year as Copernicus's De revolutionibus, the Fabrica is often paired with it as a twin founding moment of the Scientific Revolution, establishing anatomy as a rigorous observational science and influencing later breakthroughs such as Harvey's account of the circulation of the blood.
