A lightning offensive led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and allied factions captured Damascus, toppling President Bashar al-Assad, who fled to Russia. The collapse ended more than five decades of Assad family rule and the Ba'athist state, reshaping the Syrian civil war and the wider Middle East.
