Significance

Around the end of the second millennium BCE, ironworking shifted from a rare, prestige craft to a widespread technology, marking the transition from the Bronze Age to the Iron Age across the Near East and eastern Mediterranean.

Smelted iron objects had been produced in limited quantities in Anatolia for centuries, but iron's broad adoption accelerated after the Late Bronze Age collapse (c. 1200 BCE), when the disruption of long-distance trade networks made tin, essential for bronze, scarce and unreliable. Unlike copper and tin, iron ore was widely available, so once smiths mastered the higher furnace temperatures, carburisation and forging needed to make usable iron and early steel, the metal could be produced locally almost everywhere. The result was a gradual democratisation of metal tools and weapons that reshaped agriculture, warfare and economic life, lessening dependence on scarce strategic resources controlled by elites. By around 1000 BCE iron was in general use across much of the Near East, and the technology spread thereafter through Europe, Africa and South Asia.
